Why are “Youth
Retreats” so important? Well,
the truth is that they are not...that is, if they were just social
gatherings or corporate leadership training gimmick, the importance
would pale in comparison to what a Jesus-centered retreat looks like.
Our youth have plenty of places where they can find community in what
they participate and practice throughout the week and one more social
club is not what they are looking for. So, what ARE they looking for
and what do they need to find it?
First and foremost,
they need Jesus the Christ as their example of what
is good and what they can trust in when other stuff fails them, withers
away from their grasp and leaves them in confusion as to who they are
and whose they are. They need some quiet in their lives, solitude to
clear their minds so they can hear God speaking to them. They need to
submit to the will of God first so that they learn how to submit to
each other so that they can support each other as they have need. They
need us, the church, to disciple them and model a Godly life. They need
intentional and precise planning for a faith-building retreat so that
they have an opportunity to get to know Jesus and know how to practice
the relational part of faith so they can know God intimately through
Jesus. They need to learn spiritual disciplines to grow in an intimate
relationship with our Lord; how to pray, navigate the Bible, understand
scripture so that the scriptures speak to them and how to apply God’s
word to the daily situations that life throws into their paths.
At our Novemeber retreat to Wildwood, Pastor Elise loved on these kids
through the sharing of God’s word
during the sunrise service and her teaching the spiritual discipline of
“Solitude.” Additionally, they learned about “Submission” as a
spiritual discipline through the Wildwood experience in participating
as a group on their outdoor challenge coarse. The Youth Group saw Jesus
modeled through Daryl & June opening their home likened to the
Acts:2 model. They witnessed Jack, Neil and Bill arrive early in the
morning to prepare an amazing breakfast. They were nurtured by Cindy,
Lyndon, Lyn, Vickie and Tyler from Wildwood. They are blessed by each
and every one of you through your inspiring support of them. That is
why a Christ-centered retreat is so important for them to experience!

The
Youth Ministry at First
Presbyterian Church strives to meet needs of youth and parents
in
today's world. Our program is designed with two major goals: reaching
and teaching youth for Christ. To accomplish these challenging goals we
use a variety of programs to provide youth the opportunity to give
their lives to Christ and to support Christian youth in reaching their
friends for Christ.
We believe that youth ministry begins in the home. The
parents of our youth play an active role in every aspect of the youth
ministry program. Only with our parents and active volunteers are we
able to offer a program of such magnitude.
Behind every program of the youth ministry stands an
unmovable commitment to our youth. We want their joy today and their
best hope for tomorrow. Therefore, we challenge our youth to discover a
rich and meaningful relationship with Jesus Christ.

Perme, Youth Ministry Director peterp@fpcolathe.org
Peter loves
spending time with kids and talking
about Jesus. He says, "Teaching/coaching/counseling and
sometimes just hanging out with kids is my favorite thing in
life." He's a native of Overland Park; gradutated from Shawnee
Mission South and attended Westminster College. He spent summers
at his uncle's farm in Nebraska, and there he discovered a love of
God's natural wonders and learned lessons that went with his as he
worked with youth and children in Kansas City's inner city. He
found coming alongside of these kids, nurturing their spiritual growth,
was an amazing and uplifting experience. Athletics has also been
a major part of Peter's life, and under Christian coaches he found that
the disciplines of becoming an athlete parallel the disciplines of
living a life modeled through Jesus. He has spent time coaching and
training athletes at various levels, sharing the gospel with everyone
he has coached. Being a NCAA certified track and field official
and coach opened the door to being a Christian speaker on several
colleges. Peter's family shares his love for Jesus and his wife
Vickie is his partner in sharing God's love. Their son is working
on his ordination in the PC(USA); one daughter is finishing her PhD in
Physics; and their other daughter works with developmentally
handicapped adults. As Peter began on staff in September, 2011,
he said, "Vickie and I feel blessed to be working alongside the
wonderful people of FPC Olathe, participating in the good work of
sharing the Gospel of Jesus."
